History

  • In 1803, Ohio became a state and on February 18, 1804, the Ohio General Assembly passed an act establishing "The Ohio University." 
  • The University opened in 1808 with one building, three students, and one professor, Jacob Lindley. 
  • One of the first two graduates of the University, Thomas Ewing, later became a US senator and distinguished himself as cabinet member or advisor to four presidents.

  • ORSP staff aid in proposal development and award negotiation, ensuring alignment with sponsor guidelines and university, state, and federal policies.

Housing services

Library services

  • A member of the Association for Research Libraries, the Ohio University Libraries are central to learning, teaching, and research activities of students and faculty. 
  • The main library on the Athens campus is Alden Library, located on the College Green. Other facilities include the Music & Dance Library in Glidden Hall and the Library Annex.

ICT services

  • Ohio University Southern Campus and Proctorville Center has wireless network access available to students, faculty and staff, and community members on campus.
  • Students and Faculty/Staff can connect to the eduroam wireless network using their OHIO ID and password.
  • Guests can connect to the OHIO University Guest wireless network.

Medical services

  • Health Promotion helps Ohio University students become and stay healthy. We can provide you with up-to-date information, help you research health topics, and let you know when and where to attend peer-presented programs and alcohol and drug diversion programs. 
  • You can even request a workshop or presentation for your organization, residence hall, or class.

Campus life

  • Providing access to "the nation's best transformative learning community" for students throughout southeastern Ohio and beyond, that's the regional campus mission. Five campuses and two satellite centers help meet that mission.

Sports facilities

  • The Walter Fieldhouse is Campus Recreation's newest facility completed in 2014. The 93,750 square foot indoor multipurpose pavilion houses a 100 yard AstroTurf football field with 2, 10-yard end zones, 2 All-American scoreboards, a 4-lane, 316 meter practice track, long jump and pole vault pits, golf and hitting cages, 2 filming platforms, and a netting system that can accommodate multiple events.
  • The Olympic-size pool has 22 25-yard lanes, 10 50-meter lanes and a pair of one-meter and three-meter diving boards. Approximately 645,468.75 gallons create 12,300 square feet of surface water. 

Student clubs

  • Student organizations are an integral part of the OHIO community and offer students rich, interdisciplinary opportunities to learn outside of the classroom. 
  • The Campus Involvement Center strives to provide a structure and guidance for students to join together for a common purpose. 
  • Individually, student organizations provide a platform for students to develop leadership and organizational skills. 
  • Collectively, student organizations enrich campus life by enhancing the cultural, social, and intellectual life of the University. 

  • Ohio University’s E. W. Scripps School of Journalism is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. 
  • “The undergraduate civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, and chemical engineering programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET
  • The Doctor of Nursing Practice program at Ohio University is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education
