History

Originally named the University of Deseret, the University of Utah is the oldest state university west of the Missouri River. Founded in Salt Lake City on 28 February 1850, the school's first term - for men only - in November of 1850. The second term was opened to both women and men. At the end of the third term in 1852, classes were discontinued because of lack of funds.

Student services

The International Student & Scholar Services office serves as the primary campus contact for international students, scholars, and alumni. Our office fosters and supports a global campus community as part of the University of Utah's vision of a welcoming and internationally connected campus.

Housing services

The Accommodations Policy Committee, chaired by Kate Coles, Professor of English, developed this policy after more than 20 meetings with students, faculty and community members. In addition to Professor Coles, there were three student, two faculty, one staff, and one community member on the Committee. 

Library services

The libraries present at University of Utah are:

ICT services

Services include:

  • UMail is the official form of email communication at the University of Utah.
  • Box is an online cloud storage and collaboration tool.
  • Canvas is the University's Online Learning Management System where portions of classes or entire courses can be published or managed.
  • Campus Information Services (CIS) contains a variety of self-service apps.
  • KRONOS is the U's automated payroll system.

Medical services

University of Utah Health is the Mountain West's only academic health care system, combining excellence in patient care, the latest in medical research, and teaching to provide leading-edge medicine in a caring and personal setting. The system provides care for Utahns and residents of five surrounding states in a referral area encompassing more than 10 percent of the continental United States.

Campus life

Located just west of the George S. Eccles 2002 Legacy Bridge and adjacent to the Fort Douglas TRAX stop, the George S. Eccles Student Life Center connects student life with academic life and creates a more engaged campus community.  This is your place for recreation, relaxation, and socializing!

Amenities include a 50-meter pool, indoor and outdoor leisure pools, large indoor hot tub/spa, 320-yard indoor running track, bouldering & 4-story climbing wall, 15,000 square foot fitness center, outdoor mezzanine, outdoor fire pit, 5 sport courts, racquetball courts, 4 group fitness studios, and a combative room.

Sports facilities

As an integral part of the University and the community, the Athletics Department complements and supports the overall mission of the University. The Athletics Department seeks to provide the means for all student-athletes to reach their full potential academically and athletically, while also becoming positive contributors to society.

The Athletics Department supports the University's objective of creating an inclusive community that is enriched by the life experiences and backgrounds of a diverse and excellent staff and students. The Athletics Department strives for winning teams that adhere to NCAA and Pac-12 rules and display loyalty, honesty, fiscal soundness and good sportsmanship.

Student clubs

The University of Utah has clubs relating to athletics and recreation, arts and entertainment, academic and professional development, and social/multicultural. ASUU coordinates and supports over 600+ student groups on campus for you to join. We provide funding, advice and more ways for you to find and connect with students that share your interests. To make it easier to search, join or create a club, ASUU has a student group website called OrgSync.

The Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah runs one of the nation’s oldest internship programs. Each year, the Hinckley Institute places nearly 400 students locally, nationally, and globally in a wide range of government, nonprofit, think tank, and business organizations. For five decades, the Institute has championed the learning outcomes of engaging multidisciplinary students in civic processes and practical politics.
