History

Our university was established in October 1973, due to the relocation of its antecedent, the Tokyo University of Education, to the Tsukuba area. As the new concept comprehensive university in Japan to be established under a country-wide university reform plan, the University has featured "Openness" with "New Systems for Education and Research" under a "New University Administration."

Education

The University of Tsukuba gives students the opportunity develop their individuality and skills through an education that is backed by cutting-edge research. Toward this end, we set the following goals.

We aim to actively expand interdisciplinary and integrative approaches to education research, further specialized expertise and produce distinguished research. We aim to provide an environment that allows future leaders to realize their potential in full and gives them the opportunity to develop their individuality and skills through education that is backed by cutting-edge research. Promotion of basic and applied researches with scientific and social values, and researches contributing to the inheritance of science and culture to the next generation.

Based on its founding principles, the University of Tsukuba is fostering human resources who have "internationality", "future vision", and "problem-solving" ability. Our graduates are highly appreciated in various fields such as private companies, government offices, education and other fields.

Student services

The training facilities at the University of Tsukuba are established with the aim of facilitating various activities of students, staff, and faculty members of the university such as training, extracurricular activities, and recreation.

Housing services

There are plenty of welfare facilities in the University of Tsukuba so that the university students and faculty members can spend comfortable college life. In each area on campus, there are cafeterias, coffee shops, book stores, and commodity shops. In addition, there are electric goods store, beauty shop, parlor, public bath, and coin shower in Residence Hall Area.

Library services

The University of Tsukuba Library is dedicated to be the core of academic information through cooperation with the local community, research laboratories and educational organizations in Japan and overseas.

The Libray consists of the Central Library and four specialized libraries (Art and Physical Education Library, Medical Library, Library on Library and Information Science, and Otsuka Library).

ICT services

The University of Tsukuba offers unique world class facilities and resources in each academic field including a supercomputer, accelerator, plasma confinement device, biomass cultivation facility, sports science laboratory, partial radiation therapy equipment, and bio resources.

Medical services

University of Tsukuba Hospital is a major teaching hospital of the University of Tsukuba, School of Medicine and has led the country in providing innovative training programs in residencies and fellowships in various specialties. As a teacing hospital, the hospital provides multidisciplinary education to students in various areas of specialty.

Campus life

"This is not Japan, its altogether a different country", this is what most of the visitors to the University of Tsukuba comment. The University of Tsukuba is well known for its beautiful campus, from where Mt. Tsukuba can be seen. The loop line fringed with green rows of trees and promenades stretching as far as the eye can see are a few of those features that steal the visitors' heart away.

The University of Tsukuba campus is located between Higashi Odori and Nishi Odori which run north to south and is divided into five areas.

Kambara Hall is an on-campus memorial hall dedicated to the founding of the university. This unique building has Zen rooms, study rooms, and Japanese-style rooms connected by a corridor and surrounding an inner garden. It is the only Japanese-style building on campus. It is used for various purposes, including holding lectures, seminars, and study groups. Japanese-style extra curricular clubs such as Tea Ceremony, Rakugo, Noh, and Shamisen also make good use of this building.
