Texas A&M University at Qatar

History

The inaugural class of Texas A&M University at Qatar began on 7 Sept. 2003, with 29 students, of whom 24 were Qatari and 15 of these were female students. More than 600 engineers have graduated from Texas A&M at Qatar since 2007.

Education

Since the fall of 2003, Texas A&M University at Qatar has offered Bachelor of Science degrees in chemical engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and petroleum engineering. Texas A&M at Qatar also offers two graduate degrees in chemical engineering: a Master of Science (M.S.) and a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.). In addition to engineering courses, Texas A&M at Qatar provides instruction in science, mathematics, liberal arts and the humanities. The curriculum offered at Texas A&M at Qatar are identical to the ones offered at the main campus in College Station, Texas. Courses are taught in English and in a coeducational setting.

Research

Research emphasis areas include environmental issues, advanced water treatment technologies, chemical process safety, petroleum reservoir studies, mathematical modeling, machinery and controls, telecommunications, transportation and roads, electric power generation, distribution and machinery, chemistry, and physics. Research activities that address issues important to the State of Qatar are valued at more than $196 million.

Career

Texas A&M at Qatar’s Career Services Office offers one on one advising and assistance to students who are seeking internship opportunities or full time employment, in addition to recruiting services for local companies. Career Services helps students prepare for the job search and improve their professional skills by coordinating interactive sessions and informational workshops on topics such as resume and cover letter writing, applying to graduate school, and interviewing skills.

Student services

Texas A&M at Qatar has more than 20 student organizations and clubs representing students’ diversified interests that range from academic activities to entertainment. Clubs activities range from hosting lectures and art exhibitions to organizing sports activities and environmental awareness activities.

Housing services

The student lounge is divided into two areas, one for male students and one for female students. Each room has a plasma TV with the latest in gaming technology. The common area of the student lounge contains large tables for group studying, as well as two foosball tables for when a quick break from studying is needed.

Library services

The Texas A&M at Qatar library consists of two floors, a lower floor and a mezzanine. The lounge area features big tables for group studying as well as individual rooms for individual studying. Lecture hall 238 is the largest room within the Texas A&M Engineering Building. It has a capacity of 150 featuring timber walls and the latest technology, including Internet-based videoconferencing.

Campus life

The famous father-son Mexican architect team Legoretta+Legoretta designed the Texas A&M Engineering Building. Construction of the building took one year and 10 months to complete and cost $150 million USD. The Texas A&M Engineering Building is more than 55,000 sq. meters or 595,000 sq. feet. It consists of two distinct parts, a research and an academic wing.

Student clubs

Founded in 2005, Student Government Association (SGA) is a student governance organization designed to be the bridge and the connection between the student body and the administration by representing the students’ feelings, opinions, and interests. SGA is the formal voice of the students with the administration and outside the university. In addition to these formal roles, SBG sponsors, coordinates and supports student activities at Texas A&M at Qatar. SGA is comprised of student representatives and one Student Body President and Vice President. Elections for freshmen representatives, as well as all other officers and representatives, occur in the fall semester.
