Howard University

History

Howard has grown from a single-frame building in 1867 and evolved to more than 89 acres, including the six-story, 400-bed Howard University Hospital. Since 1974, it has expanded to include a 22-acre School of Law West Campus, a 22-acre School of Divinity East Campus and another three-fifths of an acre facility in northeast Washington and a 108-acre tract of land in Beltsville, Maryland.

Education

Howard University, a culturally diverse, comprehensive, research intensive and historically Black private university, provides an educational experience of exceptional quality at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels to students of high academic standing and potential, with particular emphasis upon educational opportunities for Black students.

Research

Howard University welcomes Dr. Bruce Jones as Vice President for Research. Dr. Jones will serve as the chief research officer and is responsible for developing and implementing the vision, plan, and policies to guide the University's research portfolio, and for leading all aspects of the University's research infrastructure and operations. Dr. Jones joins Howard University on April 1, 2018, and will report to Dr. Anthony Wutoh, Howard University Provost, and Chief Academic Officer.

Housing services

  • Whether you live in a residence hall or off-campus housing, Howard University has a network to support you.
  • Through the Office of Residence Life, you'll have Resident Assistants (RAs) and Graduate Resident Assistants (GAs) in your residence halls to answer your concerns and lead programming.
  • The Office of Off-Campus Housing and Community Engagement supports students who live off-campus, from tips on looking for apartments to advice about being a good community member.

Library services

 The Founders Library, named in memory of the seventeen founders of the University, is the main facility in the University Library System. Opened in 1938, the building was designed by Albert Irvin Cassell (1895-1969), an African American architect from Towson, Maryland.

Enterprise Technology Services is dedicated to help, develop, implement, and support technologies to enrich the experience of the Howard community.

Medical services

Over the course of its 145-year history of providing the finest primary, secondary and tertiary health care services, Howard University Hospital, a Level 1 Trauma Center, has become one of the most comprehensive health care facilities in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

Campus life

The university hosts a total of 89 buildings on 256 acres of land. In addition to the main campus in northwest Washington, DC, the University has a 22-acre west campus where the School of Law is located, a 22-acre School of Divinity campus in northeast Washington, and a 108-acre research facility in Beltsville, Maryland.

Student clubs

The Howard University Caribbean Students Association (HUCSA), better known as CSA, is one of the largest and most diverse student organizations on campus. Our goal is to promote cultural awareness and recognition of Caribbean people within the University and the local community. Our membership is primarily comprised of Caribbean born nationals and students of Caribbean descent. HUCSA provides haven for those Caribbean-born members venturing into a foreign environment while introducing them to the unique nuances of the American way of life.

Howard University is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and its programs in specialized fields are accredited by numerous professional agencies.
