History

On July 17th 1977, the first Executive Committee of the Institution convened under the presidency of Professor Perikles Theoharis and in the presence of the then Minister of National Education G. Rallis, consisting of the Mayor of the City of Chania and the President of the Western Crete Section of the Technical Chamber of Greece.

Education

TUC's first concern is to provide its students with an education that combines vigorous academic study and excitement of discovering new knowledge with actual support and offer of intellectual stimuli within the framework of a dynamic academic community.

Spanning five Engineering Schools - production engineering & management, mineral resources engineering, electronic & computer engineering, environmental engineering, architectural engineering - and corresponding postgraduate and doctoral study programmes that cover a wide range of the engineering science , the Technical University of Crete offers an education that is of the highest standards and recognized status.

Research

The Technical University of Crete is particularly active in conducting basic and applied research. The research and development projects, managed by the Research Committee, are funded by the European Union, the General Secretariat for Research and Technology, the Ministry of Education, the Region of Crete, local administration organizations and many private businesses. A large number of TUC undergraduate and postgraduate students are employed in these projects; in this way, they benefit from the best possible training and they familiarize with conducting research.

Career

The Career Services Office of the Technical University of Crete is funded by the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs and the European Union, within the framework of the Operational Programme for Education and Initial Vocational Training of the 3rd Community Support Framework.

The main mission of this service is to offer systematic information to TUC students and alumni on:
  • postgraduate studies
  • successful career planning
  • employment opportunities in private or public enterprises as well as self-employment opportunities.

Housing services

The University Hall of Residences, built on TUC Campus in Kounoupidiana, can accommodate up to 78 students.

There are three main buildings with 70 single-bed rooms and 4 double­ bed rooms, all of which are furnished. have private bathrooms, phone for incoming calls and use of phone cards, as well as Wi-Fi Internet access.

There are 11 common areas for all the students staying at the Halls with lounges, TV sets, refrigerators, kitchenettes, a phone and 2 lifts. There are also laundry facilities, a first-aid room, maintenance facilities and a 24hour surveillance security.

Library services

The major core of the library's collection includes loan material. All TUC members as well as the students of the Technological Institute of Crete and residents of Chania can sign up. The Library uses the GEAC-Advance automated system for managing and accessing its material.

Campus life

The campus is undoubtedly the heart of TUC: students, professors, lab technicians, administrative employees, all meet on campus on a daily basis.

Common reference points of all students are the Library, the IT & Communications Centre, the Hall of Residences, the University Restaurant and Cafeterias as well as the Sports Facilities.

And because your time as a student should not be spent only on books and studying, make sure you discover a life outside classrooms and lecture halls, even more interesting and exciting, by participating in one of the student groups and associations , which set the tone on campus!

Sports facilities

TUC provides University students with a wide range of sports programmes and recreational activities. All programmes aim to improve the quality of life of the students through sports, games, tournaments and physical activity. 

Student clubs

It is through the unions that student views are represented on all the major university committees, particularly regarding the academic and social life of the students. There are five student unions at TUC as well as an interdepartmental Student Union. These are:

  • The Student Union of the Technical University of Crete
  • The Student Union of the School of Production Engineering and Management
  • The Student Union of the School of Mineral Resources Engineering
  • The Student Union of the School of Electronic and Computer Engineering
  • The Student Union of the School of Environmental Engineering
  • The Student Union of the SChool of Architectural Engineering
