History

Founded in 1906, UWG grew from a district agricultural and mechanical school to a two-year institution and then a four-year college in 1957. We achieved university status in 1996. Here, students Go West, blazing trails to new possibilities for scholarly achievement, creative expression and service to humanity.

From our state-of-the-art computer labs and technical assistance to our extensive wellness system, the University of West Georgia offers services to ensure the success, health, and well-being of our students.

Housing services

Going West is about the complete college experience. UWG believes that those just beginning the journey are more involved with campus life if they were here. That's why freshmen are required to live on campus unless they are eligible for exemption via a residency waiver.

ICT services

The UWG Client Services Department connects faculty, staff and students to all ITS services and support. We strive to provide a single point of contact to obtain access or support for IT services and quickly resolve incidents and requests.  We also provide dedicated departmental liaisons and a growing number of experts dedicated to specific technologies and services.

UWG Health Services delivers comprehensive, high quality healthcare in an efficient, confidential and caring manner in an effort to promote student success. Our team strives to provide services that are student-centered, respectful and accessible.

Campus life

The University of West Georgia (UWG) Campus Center is a hybrid facility that functions as a student union and the home of University Recreation (UREC), Center for Student Involvement, and the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. This three-story, 131,000 square foot facility opened its doors in fall of 2006 and strives to provide the campus community with high-quality, student-focused programs, facilities and services. University Recreation takes pride in offering numerous areas and activities to ensure everyone can find a way to have fun and stay active all year.

Sports facilities

The University of West Georgia Club Sports program offers the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of athletic events while gaining friendships and developing valuable leadership skills. Each individual club is student-run and establishes an organizational framework, leadership team and schedule to meet the members' needs and expectations.

Student clubs

There are 24 fraternities and sororities in four councils: College Panhellenic Council (CPC), Interfraternity Council (IFC), Multicultural Greek Council (MGC), and National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC).

Fraternities and sororities provide service and social opportunities, promote academic excellence, community and campus engagement, and brotherhood/sisterhood.

The University of West Georgia (UWG) is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award baccalaureate, master, educational specialist and doctoral degrees.
