China-EU School of Law

The China-EU School of Law (CESL) at the China University of Political Law and Science (CUPL) is a unique institution for educating law students; for conducting and facilitating legal research and consultancy; for professional training of judges, prosecutors, lawyers, and other legal professionals.

History

The China-EU School of Law (CESL) at the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) is the first law school which was approved by the Ministry of Education (MOE) of the People's Republic of China." Former Premier Wen Jiabao expressed his hope that "CESL will educate a great cohort of talented legal professionals equipped with knowledge spanning both Chinese and Western law".

Education

CESL focuses on teaching graduate legal studies. CESL offers a three-year Double Master combining both the Master of Chinese Law (LL.M./J.M) conferred by the China University of Political Science and Law and the Master of European and International Law conferred by the University of Hamburg; the one-year Master of European and International Law; the one semester certificate programme Chinese Law Taught in English (CLTE); and a PhD / PhD exchange programme, including a three year PhD programme with the PhD awarded by the China University of Political Science and Law.

Research

CESL brings together legal experts from China, Europe and other parts of the world. This research community aims to promote, facilitate and conduct research on Chinese law, European law, international law, human rights, international trade and comparative law.

Career

CESL students have excellent career prospects. CESL collects data about the successes of the graduates when entering the labor markets. Most graduates find employment in the legal sector as lawyers, judges, prosecutors and furthermore as legal counsel immediately after graduating. Most of the alumni work in Beijing.

Housing services

Libraries, cafeterias, sports teams, dorms: The China-EU School of Law (CESL) offers the essential activities traditionally associated with university life, but our location on the doorstep of central Beijing also provides further opportunities to explore the political, legal and cultural heart of China. CESL strives to design all facilities on campus, study trips and activities to help students connect with classmates, faculty, legal practitioners and the city outside their door.

Library services

The CUPL library is available to all CESL students and scholars. There is a special CESL reading room with an extensive collection of books and journals.

The CUPL Library was the first to focus entirely on collecting legal and political materials in China and ranks among the top in the country in terms of both the size of the collection and the speed of acquisitions.

Campus life

The China-EU School of Law is located at the China University of Political Science and Law’s Changping campus. The Changping district is a suburb in northern Beijing. Major attractions such as the Ming Tombs and Jundu Mountain Range are only 15-30 minutes from campus. The Great Wall is about 1,5 hours by bus from campus. Changping is also the ideal base for exploring Beijing, one of the world’s most exciting cities. The city centreis only a 45-minute subway ride away from campus.
