History
Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS), founded in 1946, is one of the oldest medical universities nationwide. Shiraz University of Medical Sciences was first established as the "Institute of Health for Higher Education". This institute was turned into the Faculty of Medicine in 1949. Nemazee Higher Institute for Nursing and the School of Dentistry were founded in 1954 and 1970 respectively.
Education
Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS) is not only responsible for training students in medical areas, but also manages all public hospitals, clinics and healthcare centers in Fars Province in southern Iran. The private sector of the health system in Fars is also under the surveillance of SUMS.

Student services
In-coming freshman students are mandated to participate in the orientation program arranged by SUMS. As a new student, you might feel confused about the new setting where you have entered. Thus, SUMS has planned this orientation program to help you get acquainted with SUMS campuses, administration staff and offices, SUMS’ regulations, and some areas of Shiraz. Besides, during the orientation program, students will be assigned their own counselor who will support them throughout their years at SUMS.

SUMS provides all students with well-equipped dormitories in Shiraz. We provide dormitories for all students, both girls and boys.

Medical services
All international students receive a Student Health Insurance automatically, once they are enrolled to the SUMS and have submitted the subsidized fee of 150.00 USD. This insurance is valid for a period of one year and will be reissued on a yearly basis.
