History

ANU is Australia's national university and has a unique history among Australian universities. 

From late 1944 to 1945, discussions between intellectuals and administrators, including H C 'Nugget' Coombs, Alfred Conlon, and Roy Douglas 'Pansy' Wright set the scene for the establishment of a National University.

Student services

Quiet, private offices are available to ANU staff and other researchers working in Northern Australia. They are equipped with internet connection, telephone, quality furnishings and managed desktop computers with IT support are optional.  Fees are based on services provided and affiliation with a University or research organisations. ANU users are eligible for a subsidised rate. 

Housing services

  • B&G is a multicultural Hall, with people from all over Australia and all over the world, studying different degrees and at various stages of their studies. The cultural diversity of B&G allows its residents to experience deep and meaningful relationships.  We have a focus on the arts, sports, academic and positive community spirit.
  • Packard Wing was completed in 2004 and houses mainly later-year undergraduates and postgraduate students. It provides 66 single rooms and 12 double rooms for couples. There are studios with individual kitchens and bathrooms for graduate and later year undergraduate students.

Library services

From very humble beginnings in 1946, today the University Library has grown to be one of the nation's premier research and teaching collections.

Through judicious acquisitions, generous benefactions and strategic partnerships, the Library has grown from the initial 40,000 volumes assembled by the first University Librarian, A.L.G. McDonald, to become a diverse collection.

ANU recognises that a healthy university supports student success. Here you will find a number of initiatives, programs and resources that will support your physical, social, spiritual and mental health to help you to maintain a healthy lifestyle during your studies.

Campus life

Our Acton campus is in the heart of Canberra - Australia's capital city - in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).From here it's an easy walk, bike ride or drive to some of Australia's most significant political and cultural institutions including Australian Parliament House.Amongst our modern lecture halls, libraries, laboratories, student residences and administration buildings, you'll find all the conveniences of a small suburb including cafes, bars, supermarkets, child care centres, a newsagency, post office and even a medical centre.

Sports facilities

The ANU Sport Gym welcomes everyone, from students, to staff and alumni, and members of the public. With a large gym floor including our Cardio Theatre and Functional Training Studio as well as a separate Strength & Conditioning room all available to members (and kitted out with modern equipment), there is space for everyone!  

Student clubs

  • The ANU Students’ Association or ‘ANUSA’ is the peak representative body for all students at ANU, undergraduate, postgraduate and HDR. If you’re a student at ANU then you’re automatically a member of ANUSA, and membership is free.
