History

The University of Perugia was founded in 1308 when Pope Clement the 5th granted universal validity and recognition to its degree courses, one in Law and another in General Arts. Imperial recognition was conveyed in 1355 by Emperor Charles I. Nowadays, research, education and consultancies are organized in 14 Departments covering nearly all fields of study. 

Education

The University of Perugia offers a vast array of degree programs: 43 Undergraduate and 58 Graduate courses. In addition, 20 Schools of Doctorate offer post-graduate degrees in top rated specialization programs. The European Commission awarded the University the prestigious ECTS label for excellence in the application of the European Credit Transfer System confirming the high quality of the expanded international endeavors. The internationalization commitment is based on working agreements with more than 380 EU institutions of higher learning, and 130 cooperation agreements with European and extra-European universities. Several degree programs confer double degrees or European degree.  

Research

About 50 research groups receive grants from the European Research network. The research and education conducted in the Departments is enlarged by the activities of specialized institutes and centers, such as the Hospital in Veterinary Medicine and three internationally recognized centers of excellence: the Centre for Innovative Applied Nanostructural Materials in Chemistry, Physics, and Biomedicine (CEMIN), the Beer Research Centre (CRB), and the Centre for Innovative Applied Scientific Technologies in Archaeological and Art Historical Research (SMAart). 

Career

The University Job Placement service accompanies undergraduates and graduates to consciously and actively elaborate their professional project, supporting them in the choice process, in defining their professional goals and offering them the tools for an effective action plan.

Live events are annually organized where students and new graduates can interact with officials from private firms and public institutions. The University web site publishes graduate CVs and job offers from companies and is regularly updated.

Housing services

  • Access to accommodation and cafeteria services are provided for by a Public Call for Applications. The entitled students are provided with a suitable accommodation in one of the Halls of Residence. 
  • Private accommodation is also available and an on-line service helps students find certified private accommodations at favorable conditions.

Library services

The UNIPG Library System  is structured into 12 specialized libraries of different disciplinary areas, coordinated by the Library Service Center (CSB). The system includes a large Historical Fund and the European Documentation Center. Digitalization, training courses  and expert assistance help the students to fully exploit the large bibliographic patrimony.

ICT services

Computer labs are available to students at all didactic areas. Wifi area are spread throughout the campus.

Medical services

The University of Perugia offers to resident students free basic health care provided by general practitioners or emergency medical care doctors within the National Health System. The service is off campus.

Campus life

As for many historical Universities, the campus is in a sense the entire city. More recent additions for the School of Medicine and Engineering have been made.

Sports facilities

The Bambagioni Center for Sports and Recreation is located just outside the city center close to the Department of Veterinary Medicine and of Agricultural Sciences. Sport facility include tennis courts, soccer fields (for 7- or 5-a-side matches), beach-volley courts, a swimming pool (25 metres, 5 lanes), recreational rooms, a playroom for children, a club house, a café, a restaurant-pizzeria, TV rooms and rooms for meetings and private parties.

The University Sport Center (CUS) offer several sports-related activities, including: track and field, Baseball, Basketball, Body-building, Boxing, Chess, Cross Country/Alpine Skiing, Dance, Fencing, Soccer, Gymnastics, Hiking, Judo, Karate, Taekwondo.

Student clubs

There are several associations at the University of Perugia which offer students the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities.

  • The Erasmus Student Network is a non-profit international student organization whose mission is the welcoming, the accommodation, integration and outgoing support. The association provide assistance and enrich the experience of the students who chose Perugia as the city where to spend their studies abroad.
  • The University Theatre Center offers educational sessions as well as the chance to take part in plays.

Students and staff members can participate at the University Choir, called to perform at official University ceremonies and events throughout Umbria.
