California Institute of the Arts CalArts

History

Walt and his brother Roy started making this vision a reality in 1961 when they formed California Institute of the Arts through the merger of two existing L.A. schools for art and music.

Education

An all-inclusive community for a diversity of authentic voices, CalArts today offers more than 70 comprehensive degree programs in the visual, performing, media and literary arts.

Student services

The Office of Student Experience at CalArts provides a variety of student support and advocacy services, including career services, personal counseling, special events and activities, and student-sponsored clubs and organizations.

Housing services

The Institute offers housing in two separate units: Chouinard Hall for undergraduate students and Ahmanson Hall for third- and fourth-year undergraduate and graduate students. All registered students are eligible to apply for on-campus housing, and CalArts will accommodate as many students who need on-campus housing as possible.

Campus life

The campus has an indescribable energy, drawing strength from the vibrant interpersonal creative exchanges among students and faculty. More than a shared space, it is, above all, a place where boundaries are tested, innovative ideas percolate and manifest, and creativity is honored at every corner.

Sports facilities

CalArts has two tennis courts and a basketball court that are open for use from 6 am-10 pm daily. Individual or team sports and other recreational activities are all sponsored by the Office of Student Experience, formerly known as Student Affairs. The Office provides equipment for sports—including baseball, basketball, tennis and croquet—through the Activity Coordinator.

Student clubs

The CalArts Students’ Union directs the flow of information related to student needs and is headed by elected representatives of each of the six schools, as well as leaders of other student groups. The organization provides an open forum for students to express concerns about the Institute; serving as liaisons to the Board of Trustees, administration, faculty and staff; and providing for the student body by awarding grants and funding projects/events around campus.

CalArts is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), 985 Atlantic Avenue, Suite 100, Alameda, CA 94501, 510-748-9001. CalArts is also an accredited institution member of the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD).
