About

Thr Full Moon Theatre programme is offered by Architectural Association.

Overview

In 1992, in Gourgoubès, in the south of France, an international team of physicists, engineers, artists, musicians, writers, choreographers, dancers, film directors, television producers led by the French opera director Humbert Camerlo and Arup engineer Peter Rice created the first open air theatre performance exclusively illuminated by the light of the moon.

Thirty years later, the Architectural Association will recreate the Full Moon Theatre ‘Wonderful Laboratory’ as an opportunity to work together as a community after experiencing the isolation of the pandemic and reflect on the fragility of our ecosystem and on the impact of our design actions.

These are critical contemporary issues that are especially relevant in the context of the climate, energy and ecological emergencies that we are facing.

The intention of the Visiting School is to realise the following:

  • Incorporate, develop and build on existing research to DESIGN AND CONSTRUCT A SITE-SPECIFIC OPEN AIR FULL MOON THEATRE, equipped with locally digitally fabricated moonlight reflectors.
  • STAGE A TEST PERFORMANCE REHEARSAL that will be fully illuminated by the light of the moon, without using electricity.
  • Create an online ‘FULL MOON THEATRE LIBRARY’ which will include all the tools, documentation and techniques developed during the workshop for anyone to use to stage a Full Moon Theatre performance anywhere in the world in the future.

Programme Structure

The school will comprise the following activities:
  • Day 1 - Research / Design - in this phase, the class will research and study the local context, the moon path, the simulation tools, with tutor led sessions and exercises. Some of the designers involved in creating the original Full Moon Theatre will be invited to talk and contribute to the development of the design. The design will consider the mechanisms to orient the reflectors using only human energy
  • Days 2 and 3 - Fabrication / Construction: in this phase, the class will use the Hooke Park digital fabrication and manual fabrication tools to create the moonlight reflectors and other physical elements and props required by the performance.
  • Day 4 - Construction / Performance: this phase will be culmination of the Visiting School, in the form of a test performance.
