Connected to this rise is an increase in the number of substance-related harms to health and wellbeing, faced by those consuming substances, their friends and families, and wider communities. The reasons people use substances are complex and related to wider patterns of social inequalities. University of Glasgow's Substance Use in a Contemporary World course aims to help learners understand the complexities of substance use in the contemporary world.
