Overview

This course in Delirium and Sepsis at Middlesex University it will be of interest to all healthcare professionals, including community-based practitioners, adult nurses, mental health professionals working in inpatient and community settings, and students on any health programmes.
Delirium is a common and serious acute neuropsychiatric syndrome, affecting many older adults in both acute wards and in the community. Similarly, sepsis is a potentially life-threatening condition caused by the body's response to an infection and poses a significant and increasing threat to older adults.

By the end of the session, you should be able to:

Explain the meaning of delirium, its prevalence and impact upon individuals
Demonstrate skills for the assessment and management of delirium
Demonstrate person centred approach that might be used to prevent and manage delirium episodes
Demonstrate effective communication skills when interacting and understanding the needs of people with delirium
Define sepsis and its relevance to practice
Recognise signs of potential sepsis in a deteriorating service user
Develop awareness of the ‘Sepsis Six’ care bundle and its significance
