Overview
Key facts
In Rome, on Christmas Day 800 AD, a Frankish king was hailed and crowned 'emperor of the Romans' by the Pope. At Clermont in central France, on a cold November day in 1095, Pope Urban II proclaimed a crusade to liberate Jerusalem from the Turks. The coronation of Charlemagne and Urban's crusade frame the emergence of the West. Through illustrated lectures using written, artistic and archaeological sources, explore the key features of western society, which developed in the west between those two defining moments. Explore the role of Christian kingship in shaping relations between aristocracy and clergy, the growing influence of the papacy as arbiters in dynastic politics, and the rise of the knights and the development of castles and towns with University of Strathclyde's The Emergence of Christendom: The Birth of Western Europe 800- 1100 AD.
