Overview
Key facts
Between 1638 and 1652, England, Scotland and Ireland were plunged into fifteen years of bloody rebellion and revolution. The 'Wars of the Three Kingdoms' raged from cities and villages to the great manor houses, from Donegal to East Anglia, from Cornwall to Caithness. They began in Scotland which 'blew the first trumpet', spread to Ireland, which 'drew first blood', and finally to civil war in England. The consequences were many. Charles I was stripped of his rights and privileges (and his life), the parliaments of Scotland and England were elevated to having sole sovereign power. The 'Three Kingdoms' themselves were turned into the arenas of a war of religion. University of Strathclyde's A World Turned Upside Down - The British Isles at War 1638- 1660 will teach you more about this.
