History
Founded in 1954, SHNU was then named Shanghai Teachers Training College. In 1956 it was expanded into two colleges, Shanghai No. 1 Teachers College and Shanghai No. 2 Teachers College. Two years later, the two colleges were combined to form Shanghai Teachers College. In 1981, SHNU became the first batch of Chinese universities approved to confer master's degrees.
Education
With a global view, SHNU has established communications with over 200 universities and academic institutions from more than 30 countries. Moreover, a few Confucius Institutes have been established in Asia, Africa and America. Every year, more than 2,000 foreign students choose to study in SHNU, and SHNU teachers visit and study in universities abroad. SHNU students do internship overseas.

It also asks university representatives on the performance of universities, and evaluates university resources, teacher salaries, graduation rates, student academic achievements and satisfaction. After calculating and comparing these criteria, U.S. News ranks the top international universities accordingly.
