Bartlett School of Architecture

History

In 1841, UCL became the first British university to appoint a chair of architecture, Thomas Leverton Donaldson, a founding member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The faculty was later named after its benefactor, engineer and contractor Sir Herbert Bartlett.

Education

The Bartlett School of Architecture offers a comprehensive range of architecture programmes, including but not limited to the professional qualifications needed to practise as an architect in the UK.

We are world-leading teachers of architecture, passionate about exploring what architecture is and what it could be.

Whether you're looking for a short course for the summer, an undergraduate or graduate degree or want to study towards a PhD, we offer innovative and rigorous teaching, top-ranking research and state-of-the-art facilities, across two London sites.

Research

Research at The Bartlett School of Architecture extends the boundaries of our current knowledge, and designs our world of the future.

Our cross-disciplinary approach intertwines methodologies and expands architectural research to reach other fields in the arts and humanities, social and environmental sciences, and technology, in collaboration with partners from across UCL, practice and industry, and other UK institutions

Career

Our alumni have made waves in the worlds of architecture, design, manufacturing, education and research, curating, urban planning, governance and policymaking, filmmaking and more. Originally based in the UCL Quadrangle, the school moved to its 22 Gordon Street location in 1974. The building’s refurbishment was completed in 2016 and we expanded to premises in East London in 2018.
