Overview
The Genetics for GPs course at Flinders University reviews basic genetic concepts, types and utility of genetic testing, legal and ethical considerations, and most importantly, when it is appropriate to refer to a specialist service.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion you will:
Have foundational knowledge of basic genetics concepts, including different types of genetic testing and their indications, benefits, and limitations in relation to general practice.
Be able to document a comprehensive family history, recognise signs and symptoms of genetic disorders, and make appropriate referrals to genetic specialists, informed by consumer perspectives and lived experience.
Be aware of the ethical and legal issues surrounding genetic testing, including informed consent, genetic counselling, privacy and confidentiality concerns, and genetic discrimination.
Have a basic understanding of some of the recent advancements in genetics and genetic testing.
Have access to resources to facilitate your practice in this area.
Programme Structure
What You Will Study- This course begins with an introduction to genetics and types of genetic tests that are currently available. This is followed by modules on genetic conditions which are commonly seen in General Practice, and genetic testing in the context of General Practice. Social, legal and ethical issues are also discussed. Concepts are illustrated with case studies and self-assessment activities.
